First 7,5 million drinking straws in the US to be made of compostable material from Gaia Biomaterials
American sustainable serviceware producer Evanesce is just about to start producing the first 7.5 million drinking straws made from Biodolomer, a compostable material based on limestone. Biodolomer is developed and manufactured in Sweden by Gaia Biomaterials.
“The US market is 500 million straws – per day, and we offer a material that gives the feeling that customers want. The potential is enormous”, says Gaia Biomaterials CEO Peter Stenström.

UK Foreign Secretary highlights biodegradable fishing nets made from Swedish material in policy speech
The UK’s new Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, recently delivered a major policy speech addressing the climate crisis. In his speech, he highlighted biodegradable fishing nets as an example of initiatives made possible through British investments. These nets, developed in South Africa using Swedish material, have the potential to completely eliminate the problem of ghost nets in the oceans over time.

Merchant Leads the Way in Sweden: Starts with Compostable Grocery Bags Before Tax is Removed
The Swedish so-called “plastic bag tax” was introduced in 2020 to reduce the use of plastic bags, However - the 3 SEK (Eur 0,30) tex per bag was also imposed on biodegradable bags and more or less instantly killed the entire market for them. The tax will be removed this autumn, but Filip Cronberg, who runs the ICA Kvantum supermarket in the south Swedish town of Klippan, is reintroducing compostable bags already now.
– Both the customers and we have missed them, and now we are bringing them back. Even though there will be a few months where they are still taxed…

More BPI Certifications for Gaia Biomaterials Allow for New Compostable Products
Swedish company GAIA Biomaterials' limestone-based bioplastic material Biodolomer has received more compostability certifications from BPI in the USA. The new certifications cover Biodolomer T and enable the production of compostable products that require rigid materials, such as drinking mugs and food trays.

Gaia Biomaterials secure $5 million rights issue.
Gaia Biomaterials has successfully concluded a $5 million rights issue. The rights issue is backed by the Swedish state owned greentech venture capital fund Almi Invest Greentech, and private international and domestic investors. Funds will be used to expand market penetration in the United States, India, and other targeted markets.
